1.  Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
I’m a God fearing man who loves Jesus. A father to three beautiful little girls. A horticulturist with a passion of the outdoors. I’m a laborer who knows the city, I’ve been on the rooftops, I’ve been in the ditches, I know the workers, I know the leaders and I know the lay of the land.

2.  Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Mayor?
It’s a calling complete with plan.

3.   What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
Connecting the right resources to the right people and Infrastructure, let’s get New Bern ship shape.

4.  Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
Reassessing financials (this will be done immediately) I’m a fan of obtaining grants from the Federal level and outside sources, I’m a fan of the city generating revenue outside of taxation.

5.  What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
Maintenance programs put in place for our infrastructure, right now there’s thousands of potholes on secondary roads, ditches that are not cleaned (not hurricane ready), I want to see our local government working together on these issues and a plan of action made. I’m a huge fan of beautification and I have an eye for it.

6.  Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
I would like to be in office three terms to ensure a stable government before I leave office, at which time I will be running for state level government.

7.  What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
Hendersonville, I say this as population is roughly the same, growth is roughly the same, issues are roughly the same. In fact I would like to work with the Hendersonville Mayor and create an alliance for our communities during disasters, but to be proactive.

Thank you and God Bless,
Gregory Ryan Fahy

City Of New Bern Mayor Jeffrey Odham

5003 Morton Rd
New Bern, Nc 28562
Jeffrey@Jeffreyodham.Com

1.  Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
Jeffrey Odham was elected to serve as Mayor in July 2022.  He previously served as Alderman of the Sixth Ward since December of 2013. Jeffrey is the son of the late B.T. and Joan Odham and a lifelong resident of New Bern.  He married New Bern native Jeannie Haye Odham in June 2002. They have one son, Gavin. Jeffrey and his family are members of New Life Church.
Mayor Odham is a graduate of both New Bern High School and Craven Community College, where he earned an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration. He joined Glidden Paint Company in 1997 as an hourly sales associate advancing in his career to his current role as a multi-state manager. In 2002, Jeffrey and his wife became local entrepreneurs when they started a tanning salon known as Sunless Expressions, which they sold after the birth of their son.

2.  Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Mayor?
As an elected representative, Jeffrey has always been an advocate of fiscal responsibility and smart growth. That proven combination has afforded our residents the opportunity to enjoy a high quality of life and one of the lowest tax rates in the region. I want to continue serving and providing the citizens of New Bern with the representation they deserve.

3.   What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
Number one is the redevelopment of Trent Court. This development was flooded during Hurricane Florence and needs to be demolished and rebuild based on the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative plan that was created with vast community input. This would be a generational improvement for our community. Second would be the implementation of the general obligation bonds that will be voted on during this upcoming election. Whatever the public decides, we will stand ready to implement.

4.  Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
My record speaks for itself as I have never voted for a tax increase since being in office for 12 years. The first couple of years as an aldermen, we were facing with a multi-million dollar shortfall. We right-sized our organization and saved $10MM the first two years.

5.  What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
Not a lot different than it is now, but with some moderate improvements. We continue to try and recruit entertainment here for our youth. Whether that is a bowling alley, trampoline park, etc. we need to fill that void. I’d like for us to continue improving waterway access to our residents and visitors. The fishing pier was a great addition, but there is still work to do.

6.  Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
I have never had aspirations to run for office. So far, it has always just worked out. I love local government. It is the government closest to the people and truly non-partisan. I wouldn’t be opposed to working in local government in some capacity considering I could bring private sector and elected experience along with me.

7.  What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
I think a lot of cities east of I-95 face some of the same challenges. When I-42 gets operational, I believe some of those struggles will go away. New Bern is halfway between the capital and the coast. It’s a great stop along the way. We just need to continue investing in making tv e quality of life better here than other places.

1.? Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
I was born in Chicago, Illinois until the age of sixteen, when my family moved to New Orleans. Upon turning seventeen, I enlisted in the Marine Corps where I served honest and faithfully for twenty-eight (28) years. I started as a Private (E1) and finished as a Master Gunnery Sergeant (E9). While on active duty, I earned a B.S. in Biblical Studies from the University of Mount Olive, and a Master of Theological Studies, (MST) from Regent University School of Divinity.
I am married to my wife Sherry (for 30 years) who also served twenty (20) years as a U.S. Marine and together we raised four sons’: of which three are still actively serving and one is retired. Our sons have left us a rich legacy of eleven (11) grandchildren, and one on the way.
Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, I worked as a contractor at Cherry Point, and subsequently as a Federal Civil Service worker, utilizing the very same leadership and technical skills earned as a Marine. In January 2004, we planted a church here in the great City of New Bern, NC where I still serve as Senior Pastor for the past twenty-one (21) years.
I am a past Board Member for Habitat for Humanity (New Bern affiliate), Former Adjunct Professor at Pamlico Community College, and Adjunct Chaplain at Carolina East Medical Facility, Board Member for Christian Emphasis Committee at New Bern YMCA.

2.? Why do you want to serve as City of New Bern Mayor?
To apply sound and effective leadership along with a skillset to bring leaders together with an emphasis on advancing our city towards prosperity, transparency, accountability, and responsiveness. We are at a moment where the citizens are seeking trustworthy leadership, inclusiveness, and leadership with a heart and ear that responds to their needs and issues pertaining to quality of life. I am confident that I can effectively serve in the office of Mayor because of my leadership, vision, integrity, transparency and a genuine care for the citizens will aide in moving our city forward with the heart and spirit of togetherness that incorporates diversity and inclusiveness.

3.? What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
I would immediately address a very unsafe public safety concern within our subsidized housing apartments where there has been a cry for help (from the residents) to eradicate mold in several of the tenant’s home. This is not only a public safety concern, but an environmental risk as well as a quality-of-life issue. I plan to be hands-on with initiating a swift resolution and keep it as a top priority until the matter has been fully resolved. Then I would focus on my platform.
First, I would keep a keen focus on our storm water issues that continues to plaque our city. Though our public works department has been tirelessly working to make things better, I plan to work closely with our public works leadership, city manager and all Aldermen to ensure support and finances are readily available to aid in our effort to remediate rainwater nuances affecting residences as well as local businesses.
Secondly, I would be deliberate in ensuring that our power infrastructure is rebuilt (eventually in its entirety) to ensure that the citizens of New Bern have consistent and adequate power (prior to and during times of severe storms). It is important that our citizens are consistently made aware of the status of our power infrastructure, whereby, they are confident that their personal lives as well as their businesses thrive with an un-interrupted power system.

4.? Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
I believe that responsible budgeting always outweighs the need for tax increase and referendums that affect tax increase. I (along with the city manager, Board of Aldermen and our Chief Financial Officer) will carefully examine the budget and decide on which non-essential line items that may need to be cut or re-aligned in an effort meet our daily operational needs. It will be irresponsible for me to speak about raising or lowering taxes without having a factual issue before me. We never know what tomorrow will bring and I personally would not like to paint myself in a corner and become a liar by making a suggested promise that I will not be able to keep.

5.? What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
Having a strong and reliable utilities infrastructure. To have most or all our storm water projects completed. I would like to see the entire city thrive from having a sound and robust economic plan manifested with new industry that provide livable family raising wages, flourishing local businesses, and a city where our youth are developing in civic activities, professional mentorship, and volunteerism.

6.? Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
I see myself serving as a Lead Professor at a School of Divinity, Philanthropist, Author, and Mentor for Senior Pastors around the world.

7.? What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
My research has found cities like Fayetteville, NC, Rocky Mount, NC and Greenville, NC with similar rainwater issues. These cities are just as challenged as New Bern and have placed significant efforts in trying to remediate storm water. It gives me great confidence that though our concerns are similar, the city of New Bern will be successful in addressing our environmental challenges.

1. Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
I’m a local government attorney, husband, and proud father of three daughters. My wife introduced me to New Bern early in our relationship—we married downtown eleven years ago and returned four years ago to raise our family and for my role at Sumrell Sugg, P.A. New Bern’s strong community values make it an ideal place to call home.
I began my career as a high school math teacher after graduating from NC State as a Teaching Fellow. My students’ challenges led me to education policy and then law school at Campbell University, where I was Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review and worked on local government issues at the General Assembly.
Since returning, I’ve stayed active in the community—serving as Secretary of the Craven County Community Foundation, teaching Sunday school at First Baptist Church, and sitting on the New Bern Board of Adjustment. I’ve also held roles with the Craven County Bar Association and SECU Advisory Board.
I represent local governments statewide on law enforcement, land use, and constitutional issues. I’m running for Ward 1 Alderman to bring thoughtful, community-focused leadership rooted in faith, family, and public service to help shape New Bern’s future. Folks can learn more about me and my campaign at Treyforward1.com.

2. Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 01?
As an attorney for local governments, my role is not to advise on the content of policy decisions but to advise on the legal implications of those decisions. However, for my community, I want the opportunity to help shape policies to support responsible growth for New Bern. I’m running because I believe Ward 1 deserves a leader who listens carefully and puts people first. I want to be a bridge between our neighborhoods and City Hall in order to bring transparency, responsiveness, and a vision for the future to the work of our local government. Our city has real opportunities ahead, and I want to make sure we seize them in ways that benefit everyone.

3. What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
Resiliency and economic growth. Many of our historic neighborhoods are vulnerable to flooding and aging infrastructure. We need to invest in long-term solutions that protect homes, preserve history, and keep people safe. At the same time, our downtown area is New Bern’s economic engine. We need to make sure it continues to thrive while also ensuring that growth benefits the whole city, not just a few blocks. That means supporting small businesses, improving walkability and encouraging a variety of housing opportunities, all while making sure longtime residents share in the opportunities ahead.

4. Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
I believe local government has a duty to provide strong, effective services, but also to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. Faced with a budget shortfall, raising property taxes should be a last resort. I would first look at reducing inefficiencies, prioritizing essential services, and exploring ways to grow revenue through smart economic development that increases our sales tax base. We need to protect core services while being judicious with spending and transparent with the public about the trade-offs involved.

5. What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
In 5 to 10 years, I’d like to see a New Bern that has grown in a well-planned and strategic way. Our community is expanding, and we need to be ready with strong infrastructure, reliable public services, and a clear vision (and strategic plan) for the future. I want to see vibrant neighborhoods, a growing local economy, and new businesses throughout the city, not just in one area. By planning ahead and investing wisely, we can support growth that benefits residents, attracts visitors, and preserves the historic charm that makes New Bern a great place to live.

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
In four years, I see myself running for reelection to the Ward 1 seat, and in eight years, I see myself finishing out my second term. During that time, I see myself continuing to engage with our community and responding to its concerns.

7. What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
New Bern shares some common challenges with cities like Wilson and Kinston, particularly in managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, and maintaining strong public services. However, what sets New Bern apart is our historic charm and unmatched natural beauty. Located between two rivers, we have incredible assets that many cities simply don’t: our waterfront, vibrant downtown, and deep historical roots. These unique qualities position us to grow not just through traditional economic development, but also by expanding tourism and outdoor recreation. With thoughtful planning, we can leverage what makes New Bern special to build a stronger, more resilient local economy

Together, they have five children and two grandchildren. Through their military service, Alana and Mike have lived in Eastern North Carolina on and off since 2004, ultimately making downtown New Bern their forever home after retirement. Alana now serves as president of AH Forensic Consulting, Inc., is active in the New Bern Woman’s Club, and is a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 01?
2. I decided to run for Ward 1 Alderman because I care deeply about our community and believe we need strong, responsive leadership that truly represents the voice of our residents. My decision comes from a history of service and a desire to represent a ward where everyone feels heard. I believe the perspective of a veteran with 22 years of leadership experience brings invaluable insight to civic leadership. I have raised my family and completed a distinguished career, and I have the time to give 100% to our ward. I believe New Bern deserves representation rooted in honor and action.

3. What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
1. Foster a Thriving Local Economy
Goal: We will champion small businesses, attract responsible investment, and create meaningful job opportunities to build a resilient and inclusive economy. By nurturing entrepreneurship and supporting local talent, we will ensure New Bern thrives!

Key Actions:

Host regular “Shop Local” campaigns and community markets to boost visibility.

Streamline permitting and licensing processes to attract more small businesses owners.

Continue engagement with Craven Community College VOLT Center to align workforce development with employer needs while providing mentorship, shared resources, and networking opportunities.

2. Preserve Historic Infrastructure & Enhance Public Services
Goal: New Bern’s historic infrastructure is more than just bricks and mortar—it’s the soul of our city. We will be committed to restoring and revitalizing these treasured assets with solutions that are energy-efficient, storm-resilient, and cost-effective. Additionally, we will continue investing in modernizing our roads, utilities, and public services. These improvements will enhance safety, boost efficiency, and elevate the quality of life for every resident—today and for generations to come

Key Actions:

Strike a balance between preserving the home’s historical integrity and integrating modern amenities that enhance comfort, functionality, and—most importantly—cost-efficiency, all without being hindered by outdated regulations.

Improve roadways, parking, and emergency services to boost safety and accessibility.

Implement smart city technologies to increase efficiency in waste management, water systems, and public safety.

3. Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
I would support a balanced approach to budget shortfalls. I would advocate for targeted spending cuts in inefficient or outdated programs, tax reforms and growth-oriented investments such as the 2025 bond referendum on this year’s ballot.

4. What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
I believe New Bern could become a model for how small towns honor their past while building a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-thinking future. I would like to see more walkable streets and businesses, a robust riverwalk, a sustainment of native landscaping and a thriving Pepsi Museum! Additionally, I would love to have civic engagement hubs where residents can shape policy, volunteer, and connect with local leaders.

5. Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
I hope to be walking stronger in my faith with God, active in serving my community, healthy and spending as much time with my family as I possibly can!

6. What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
I believe the beautiful coastal town of Beaufort, NC has many of the same problems and needs as New Bern. There is a strong focus on historic preservation and tourism, and it has similar issues regarding infrastructure, stormwater and seasonal population shifts.

City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 02 Sharon C. Bryant

2011 Waters St
New Bern, Nc 28560
info@scb4ward2.org
2526757306

1. Sharon C. Bryant Short Bio
I am a proud New Bern native and lifelong champion for cultural preservation, education, and community empowerment. After more than two decades as African American Outreach Coordinator at Tryon Palace, I retired in 2024, leaving behind a legacy of storytelling, heritage celebration, and transformative programming. My signature achievements include founding the African American Lecture Series, designing the 16—block African American Heritage Walking Tour, reviving the historic Jonkonnu tradition, and leading oral history projects honoring Black educators. In 2025, I helped bring the Bahamian Junkanoo Commandos to New Bern’s Juneteenth celebration, forging global ties across the African diaspora. I also co-led a cultural journey to Ghana in 2010, deepening ancestral connections. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, my work is rooted in my love for family and an unwavering belief that our children’s education must always come ?rst.

2. Why do you want to serve as City of New Bern Ward 2 Alderman?
I’m running for Alderman because Ward 2 matters to me, and to the future of New Bern. This community is built on rich history, strong traditions, and hardworking families. But we also face real challenges: affordable housing, public safety, economic opportunity, and ensuring every resident feels seen, heard, and included in our city’s growth.

My decision to run is rooted in a commitment to listen, to unite, and to ensure Ward 2 has a strong, respected voice at the table when decisions are made. I believe leadership means being present, accessible, and accountable. It means honoring the concerns of longtime residents while embracing the energy and promise of new families and younger generations choosing to build their lives here.

Serving as Alderman isn’t about holding a title it’s about building trust, fostering partnerships, and working every day to help Ward 2 thrive, now and for generations to come.

3. What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
(a) Affordable Housing & Safe Neighborhoods

Too many families in Ward 2 are burdened by rising housing costs and aging infrastructure. As Alderman, I will advocate for expanded access to affordable housing, targeted improvements to existing homes, and safer, well-maintained neighborhoods where every resident feels secure and supported.

(b) Economic Opportunity & Community investment

Ward 2 deserves a future where opportunity lives close to home. I will champion support for small businesses, job training, and youth development programs that empower residents to grow and succeed. By investing in our local economy and in our people, we can break down barriers, strengthen families, and build lasting pride in our community.

4. Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
In times of budget shortfalls, we must lead with discipline and transparency. I believe the ?rst step is a thorough review of city spending eliminating waste, identifying ef?ciencies, and ensuring every dollar serves the public good. Cutting essential services is not an option, but we can stretch our resources through smart partnerships, strategic planning, and pursuit of grants.

When it comes to taxes, I view them as a last resort. Before considering any increase, I would work closely with the community to explore alternative funding sources and cost-saving measures. If revenue adjustments become necessary, I will ensure they are fair, transparent, and balanced, protecting working families and avoiding undue burdens on those already facing hardship.

My priority is clear: keep New Bern ?nancially strong while safeguarding the vital services our residents rely on every day.

5. What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
In the next 5 to 10 years, I envision New Bern as a thriving, inclusive city where every resident feels heard, valued, and empowered. I see safe, well-connected neighborhoods, modern infrastructure, and affordable housing that allows families to grow and stay rooted in the community they love.

I want to see local businesses ?ourish and meaningful job opportunities, especially for our young people so they can build successful futures right here at home. I believe in investing in our parks, cultural programs, and public spaces to ensure New Bern remains a vibrant destination that honors its rich history while embracing new energy.

Above all, I dream of a community united where neighbors work together across generations and backgrounds to ensure no one is left behind, and everyone has a stake in our shared success.

6. Where do you see yourself in 5 — 10 years?
In 5 to 10 years, I see myself continuing to serve whether as an elected of?cial or in another leadership role, dedicated to building a stronger, more inclusive New Bern. My goal is to ensure every neighborhood has the resources, support, and opportunities it needs to thrive, so that no part of our community is left behind.

7. What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
Cities like Kinston, Rocky Mount, Wilson, Elizabeth City, and Goldsboro face many of the same challenges as New Bern. Each is working hard to balance growth with equity—ensuring no neighborhood is left behind.

Like New Bern, these communities are grappling with:
Revitalizing aging neighborhoods and eliminating blight
Creating good-paying jobs and pathways for young people to stay and build a future
Expanding access to affordable housing for families and seniors
Strengthening public safety and youth engagement so every resident feels secure and valued

What connects us is more than shared challenges, it’s a shared spirit. We are historic, hardworking cities with proud traditions and resilient people. By focusing on fairness, opportunity, and strong community partnerships, New Bern can lead by example proving that small cities can tackle big challenges and build a future that works for everyone.

1.  Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
I am a native of Eastern North Carolina. I moved to New Bern 7 years ago. After working for over 20 years in a local community action agency, I made the move to a property management position serving a local, low-income senior and disabled apartment community. I am an active member in my church, serving as the Administrative Assistant. I am involved in several local and state community organizations. I am a former member of Toastmasters International and received the Distinguished Toastmaster of the Year for the State of North Carolina in 2018.

2.  Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 04?
The citizens of Ward 4 have not had a new Alderman since 2009. It is time for new leadership within Ward 4. I can bring a fresh perspective to the Board and recognize that it is “We the People” whom I serve.

3.   What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
Public safety is high on my priority list. I plan to bring viable options to the Board that would help reduce speeding throughout our neighborhoods, increase accessible sidewalks throughout the ward, and make high-traffic, pedestrian crosswalks safer.

Being accessible to the citizens of New Bern, especially the citizens within Ward 4 ranks the highest on my priority list. Because I understand the citizens of Ward 4 would be hiring (electing) me for their Alderman, I have an obligation and responsibility to them to ensure there is open communication between me and them – that they can connect with me throughout my time on the Board, not just during election season.

4.  Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
Being fiscally conservative from the onset would, hopefully, prevent any budget shortfalls. However, should the city find itself in that position, I am a proponent of figuring out where spending cuts could be made (without eliminating jobs). Increasing taxes should be the absolute last option to consider.

5.  What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
Within the next 5-10 years, I would like to see smart growth of our city to include more affordable housing for all income levels as well as more places for families and youth to enjoy.

6.  Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
New Bern is my home. If I am not serving a second term as Alderman (which would be a self-imposed term limit), I will be serving the citizens of New Bern in some capacity.

7.  What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
I would say many of the smaller coastal cities have similar problems and needs as it relates to stormwater and drainage issues as well as affordable housing.

City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 05 Manny Ruiz

23 Lake Tyler Dr
New Bern, Nc 28562
Mannyruiznc@gmail.com
7577494145
1.  Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
Manny Ruiz is the son of Colombian refugees that escaped the terrors of cartels and communist terrorists. He has been involved in politics since he was 12 and has been a passionate voice for Gen Z. Despite being raised in Virginia, he has always considered New Bern his hometown. While finishing his bachelor’s degree in Pensacola, Florida, Manny saw that New Bern was at a crossroads. Rather than just sit back and wait for others to act, Manny has led the charge in tackling the housing crisis and lack of responsive leadership in city hall by running for New Bern Board of Alderman.

2.  Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 05?
Ward 5 needs new leadership. Our citizens feel like they have no voice at city hall. We need leaders who live in our community, walk our streets, and know our struggles. Ward 5’s current leadership is not giving us that. I believe that I offer the citizens of New Bern, especially Ward 5, a new vision for what is possible when leaders care and interact with our citizens.

3.   What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
 1) Redevelopment: The potential of redevelopment in the Greater Five Points is something that I have been talking about since before I ever ran for office. This would be one of my key focuses in the office.
 2) Accessibility: Residents in areas like Lake Tyler, Glenburnie, and Woodrow feel abandoned by our city. A lot of New Bern is flourishing, but Ward 5 seems to have fallen behind. There is so much potential (look at Martin Marietta Park – it has so much untapped potential!) in our ward. With the right leadership advocating for us, Ward 5 can flourish.

4.  Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
Ideally, you avoid shortfalls by preparing for a rainy day. Of course, there are times (like Hurricane Florence) when the unforeseen and unavoidable occurs. In those instances, finding places for temporary cuts should be our starting points. Raising taxes, fees, or rates should be a last resort. At the end of the day, even a $20 increase on taxes will affect somebody’s ability to put food on the table. Any increase to these rates should be done so with a lot of consideration and caution. Ideally, any increase ought to be temporary and specifically designated for a specific purpose.

5.  What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
I would love to see the redevelopment of the Greater Five Points community underway, with significant work already done. Martin Marietta Park development has proceeded, so that city hall can keep the promises it made to our citizens.

6.  Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
Unless the Lord says otherwise, I fully intend to still be teaching my highschool students 5-10 years from now. I intend to serve in any capacity the people of New Bern allow, whether that be serving on the Board of Alderman or serving as local advocate. No matter what, I intend to stay active in city politics to make sure my city is able to be a home for generations to come.

7.  What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
No city matches us 1/1. But there are examples of cities both in North Carolina and beyond that can be examples of where we need to go. In the coming decades, we will reach the population of Wilson, NC. We ought to see how cities like Greenville, Wilson, and others dealt with the growth and learn from their successes and failures. We need to make sure this future growth positively impacts our community.

City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 06 Nat Mckeller Crosby

116 Innisbrook Ct  New Bern, Nc  28562
ward6fornat@gmail.com
Phone: 8045029122

1.  Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
Nat McKeller Crosby is a former appointed government official, President of a chamber of commerce, president of a youth center, and state leader for the White House office of Political Strategy and Outreach. They have dedicated themselves to public service and have succeeded in policy initiatives like capital access for small businesses and entrepreneurs and the care economy for affordable childcare and paid leave for all. They are a Realtor by trade celebrating ten years in the business in September. In their personal capacity, they enjoy the great outdoors engaging in kayaking, archery, swimming and bike rides.

2.  Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 06?
My background in policy work has always been centered around helping strengthen local communities. There is a lot of growth happening in Ward 6 and I want to represent Ward 6 as our Alderman to help guide this growth in a smart and forward thinking way to ensure we have the infrastructure upgrades and maintenance needs met before more issues come about. We also have a need for more tradespeople and doctors so that our community can have access to the services they need most in a timely fashion. Investments in all of these community needs are what I will work with the rest of the Board of Alderman to achieve.

3.   What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
Everyone I speak with has the same understanding that once you come pass this side of 95 the income level drops significantly. We have long looked to outside investment in order to assist with this issue but relying solely on outsiders is not enough when we have more than enough people here that we can invest in to solve our own problems and create more good paying jobs right here at home. Homegrown industries are possible if we make the investment in ourselves. I want to invest in our community, invest in the people of our community to increase the amount of tradespeople we have in the area, small business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals able to make a living wage.  I also want to make sure that we get a handle on our public infrastructure. Our utility grid has not received the attention that it should have and now we are paying higher costs because of it. Adding substations and updating transformers so that we can keep our grid safe and secure is necessary after so many years of neglect.

4.  Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
I think we’ve got to think outside the box. We are being faced with having to make ends meet with less and we need leadership that can address this head on. A public bank, similar to our public utility, could give us the leverage we need to avoid raising taxes on our citizens and with good fiscal management allow us to keep unnecessary spending down to a bare minimum while giving us the financial infrastructure to invest in ourselves and build resilience in our community.

5.  What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
I would like to see our community filled with folks who are making a good living with local ownership of industry, small businesses and entrepreneurship, also our seniors supported with the social activities and medical care they need to thrive and our families having access to affordable childcare and a family friendly economy that will keep New Bern a great place to raise a family.

6.  Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
In 5 – 10 years I would like to be right here in New Bern working hard to make us the thriving economic center of Eastern North Carolina for generations to come.

7.  What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
Eastern North Carolina has many cities with similar problems and needs and they already look at what we here in New Bern are doing. Let’s continue to set the best example we can in promoting local problem solving and resiliency throughout the region.

1.  Short biography – (200 words or less, please)
(I have attached a resume to help answer the #1 question.)

2.  Why do you want to serve as City Of New Bern Alderman Ward 06?
In answer to the #2 question, I have been out of city elected activities for the past three years, in this period of time rate schedules, future planning for the electric grid and sewer expansion must be considered and researched now.  I have that background and look forward to helping to move the city forward in those areas.

3.   What are your top two priorities for improving the lives of those in our community?
Support of our First Responders is a very important item, decreasing response time, in “these times” support not hindering or neglecting resources needed would be priority items for the #3 question.

4.  Faced with budget shortfalls, would you support cutting spending or increasing taxes?
For the #4 question, fiscal responsibility has always been a concern of mine.  To speak in hypotheticals, it would be difficult to give an absolute answer to a question of what shortfalls and what rate or tax increases would be raised. The LGC Local Government Commission requires an 8 percent fund balance in all funds. I pledge as I always have to provide the most services and the least expenditure of taxes or rates on our citizens.

5.  What would you like to see our community look like in 5 – 10 years?
The #5 question we must continue to grow our economy and grow as a city or face regressive actions such as less tourism, less employment for the area, etc.  I would like to be part of smart growth that we have and provide for the future needed services and resources.

6.  Where do you see yourself in 5 – 10 years?
The #6 question I plan to continue to be involved in our city and county and serve in bluegrass and gospel music for God’s glory and continued involvement in the family business.

7.  What North Carolina cities do you consider similar in problems and needs?
The #7 question, I have worked with the Mayors of Goldsboro, Morehead City, and Washington on similar problems.
